All work made in response to my travels. My family is spread out over the US and I'm lucky enough to visit them often. As I am traveling to different locations I am picking up unique yarns from Local Yarn Stores that remind me of that place. This Nomadic Knitting series is an investigation on how those yarns work together. As I travel, I have a project with me that I add to in the down times of travel. Then I scour the local yarn shops to find new material to add to the piece. The pieces become a time capsule of where I've been and allow me to keep those places and memories close to me.
This shawl is based off of the FRINGED pattern by Stephen West. I took a few liberties in color changes, but I kept to the general pattern. This was the first real shawl I completed and learned I don't like following patterns very much! I made this in Baltimore, MD, New York City, NY, Evergreen, CO, and Care Free, AZ with yarns from Baltimore two of which are hand dyed by me.
I think it is so amazing how knitting has really had a revival. However, I don't feel like crochet has had the same renaissance. I've always wondered if there were some patterns and projects that could be as flat laying and beautiful in crochet as in knitting. I found this easy to follow Prayer Shawl pattern. I made this for a friend who underwent an extremely invasive surgery. I made this piece with her in mind and she had it with her before she went into surgery. This piece was made in Baltimore, MD, and Care Free, AZ with yarns from Baltimore, MD and Phoenix, AZ.
This piece has since been finished post documentation. I made this in the days I was really obsessed with Prayer Shawls. This piece had no particular person in mind that I was making it for. It actually sat in my home, unfinished, for about a year. In that time, a family friend's son died in a car crash, and I started to feel like this piece was made for her. As I moved away from Baltimore, I finally decided to pass this work off to my Mom, who was going to see the family friend sooner than me. As soon as it left me, I knew I had made the right decision. This piece was made in Baltimore, MD with yarns from Baltimore, MD, Denver, CO, and Phoenix, AZ.
This piece was was my first foray into improvisational knitting. Using a simple triangle shawl pattern that started with one cast on stitch this piece was produced. I enjoyed playing with the freeing nature of improv and with the eyelets to create texture. These photos were made in a beautiful little grove in Arizona by my Dad. This piece was made in Baltimore, MD, and Care Free, AZ with yarns from Grand Rapids, MI, Denver, CO, Salem, MA, Omaha, NE, and Scottsdale, AZ
